Seth MacFarlane, the creator of “Family Guy” and “The Orville,” has taken a significant step in supporting the ongoing strike by SAG-AFTRA and WGA members in the film and TV industry. According to a report from Variety, MacFarlane has generously donated $1 million to the Entertainment Community Fund (ECF), formerly known as The Actors Fund.
The ECF aims to provide financial assistance to striking workers who may not have the same resources as well-known figures like MacFarlane and other prominent donors.
Since the WGA strike began in May, the ECF has successfully raised a total of $6.3 million, thanks to contributions from more than 7,500 donors, including MacFarlane. These funds will be used to assist industry workers who are facing financial challenges during the strike.
Annette Bening, chair of the Entertainment Community Fund, expressed her gratitude to the donors and emphasized the immediate impact of their contributions. The pandemic has exacerbated financial struggles within the industry, making these donations crucial for supporting workers in need.
Guild members who are affected by the strike can request emergency funds from the ECF. Since the strikes began, the demand for financial assistance has soared, with weekly distributed funds rising from approximately $75,000 to between $400,000 and $500,000.
Seth MacFarlane’s donation is just one example of the entertainment industry’s solidarity during these challenging times. Recently,Dwayne Johnson made headlines for his undisclosed donation to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Emergency Financial Assistance Program, the largest individual donation the foundation has ever received.
As the strike continues, the contributions from these prominent figures and other donors play a vital role in supporting workers and fostering resilience within the industry.
